PAINTING can reduce stress, improve memory skills and broaden your horizons — so why not join an art class to beat the winter blues?

Artist Sophia Flowers, whose latest series of classes will start at the Salvation Army Hall, Newport. later this month (January), said: "When one is painting everything else is momentarily forgotten, including any worries and concerns."

She said painting was the perfect tonic to elevate a blue mood during the winter months.

One of her students, Peter Ratcliffe, said: "I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017 and undertook radiotherapy and hormone therapy over a 12 month period.

"During this time, the painting workshops and personal support from Sophia were amazingly helpful and the good news is the treatment was successful.

"I continue with my painting to this day which I find very enjoyable."

The classes are open to both beginners and those looking to improve existing skills.
