A POETRY and concert event held on Sunday to try to save East Cowes's landmark umbrella tree has been hailed a great success by organisers.

More than 30 people came to make a stand against controversial proposals to cut it down and to recite their poems in honour of the tree.

The tree faces being chopped down after it was found to be diseased but campaigners hope it can be saved.

In between the poems, there was mulled wine and Epiphany Cake to enjoy and there was also musical entertainment - golden oldies - from musician Simon Shelley.

A Facebook site has been created by campaigners in their battle to save the tree. Its address is: https://www.facebook.com/SaveSupportTheUmbrellaTreeEastCowes/
