ANOTHER Isle of Wight horse rider has spoken out after she had three near misses with 'speeding' vehicles.

Claire Woodward, 33, is the second rider to tell the County Press about multiple near misses on Island roads this week.

She said she 'genuinely cried' after a string of incidents left her horse Twiggy 'beside herself'.

The Shanklin resident claims she only used three small stretches of road during her two hour ride through connecting bridleways, but each time, cars refused to slow down or give Twiggy adequate space.

"The first car was travelling at least 40 miles an hour and completely ignored my desperate arm signals to slow down," said Miss Woodward.

"Instead they choose to pass us by without even so much as changing down a gear, so fast that Twiggy spooked, jumped forwards and skidded on the road.

"The second incident happened on a section of road with double white lines.

"This means no overtaking unless safe to do so. It does not mean you should overtake on a blind corner, at speed while revving your engine.

"The third was a narrow quiet country lane, I could hear the van coming, and so could Twiggy, who by now was thoroughly tense.

"He came round the corner at speed, saw my horse and never slackened, going past us at well over 30 miles an hour.

"This was just too much for my poor girl who was now absolutely beside herself.

"She threw herself against the hedge and again skidded on the tarmac almost falling over.

"I just burst into tears."

Miss Woodward believes drivers would not ordinarily pass a child on a bike, a hiker or someone pushing a pram, so why pass a horse at speed?

She added: "In a two hour hack, I was on the roads for a total of 15 minutes and was lucky not to have been seriously injured or killed three times.

"How well do you think you will come off if hit by a 1,200lbs animal smashing through your windscreen?

"It takes an extra 30 seconds to slow down and pass wide and slow."
