A 10-YEAR lease has been agreed with Bembridge Parish Council and Captain Stan's Fish Shop after months of controversy.

Heated disagreements between parishioners and councillors have raged on since last year when the sale of council-owned 5/7 High Street, where the fish shop is located, was announced by the council.

Parishioners feared losing the building as it houses the fish shop, public toilets and other amenities that residents believed could have turned a profit for the parish council.

But with the lease being signed, the fears of losing the fish mongers appear to be over.

A spokesman for the parish council said: "Bembridge Parish Council is very pleased to announce that negotiations with the tenants of Captain Stan’s Fish Shop are now complete. The 10-year lease has been signed by both parties and is now in effect.

"It’s fantastic news that the community will continue to benefit from a local fishmonger located in the heart of the village."

However, tensions are still running high in the village, with police called just one week ago after residents staged a 'biscuit protest' outside the parish office with a giant inflatable digestive.

Fish shop owners Mike and Ruth Curtis have been contacted for comment.
