PUNCHING a staff member and damaging a window at The Foyer, Ryde, landed a man before Isle of Wight magistrates.

It was an expensive hearing for Curtis Lyndon David Jenkins, who was ordered to pay £1,000 compensation to repair the window.

Jenkins, 20, of Hookes Way, Newport, admitted assault by beating and criminal damage charges when he appeared in court on Friday (December 7).

The court heard he was visiting friends at the George Street centre, which provides supported accommodation for young people, on the evening of November 6.

Prosecuting, Vivian Ducie said he lashed out at a security guard after his alcohol was confiscated, punching him in the hand.

"The assault was relatively minor and did not cause any injury," said Mr Dulcie.

"The security guard tried to shut the glass hatch, which the defendant then damaged.

"It was reckless rather than deliberate."

Defending, Liz Miller said Jenkins could not remember much about the incident but accepted he was guilty.

"He would like to write a letter of apology," she said.

"He is not working but, after training, is hoping for a job in the building trade."

Jenkins, who has no previous convictions, was given a six month conditional discharge and urged to stay out of trouble.

He was told to pay £1,000 compensation towards the £1,300 cost of the window, and a £20 surcharge.

Presiding magistrate Mark Couch said: "This is going to be an expensive visit for you.

"This is the only debt in your life where you can go to prison if you don't pay."
