A DRUG driver chased through Pan by police has admitted a string of driving offences.

David William Saunders, 26, of Highfield Road, Newport, was arrested following the police chase near his home on September 9.

Appearing at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court today (Monday), he admitted dangerous driving, drug driving, and driving without a licence or insurance.

The court heard officers in a marked police car spotted his Audi A3 making a sharp turn into Robin Hood Street at around midday, suggesting he was trying to get away from them.

Ann Smout, prosecuting, said a pursuit through the estate — largely a 20mph limit — ensued.

She said Saunders drove at 55mph in a 30mph zone, towards Asda, and through a 'no entry' sign in a 'panicked' attempt to evade the police.

With blue lights flashing, and a siren sounding, the court heard the officers chased Saunders until he stopped the car at Barton Road. He was then arrested.

Mrs Smout said officers considered the risks before giving chase. Considering it was a Sunday and there was very little traffic, or pedestrians, they felt it was safe.

Once apprehended, Saunders was tested for drugs. Both a roadside swab and subsequent blood test confirmed he had cannabis in his system. He gave a reading of seven. The legal limit is two.

Saunders told police he had smoked a joint around an hour before getting behind the wheel.

He said he did not have a driving licence due to a medical condition. The court heard he suffered from seizures and was not permitted to drive.

The case was adjourned to the Isle of Wight Crown Court for sentencing on December 21.
