A ROBOT Wars judge and master inventor will be among the guest speakers at a tech and digital conference next week.

Digital Disrupt, an informal evening of entertainment, conversation and networking, will be held at Cowes Yacht Haven next Thursday (November 15).

It has been organised by volunteers from the Isle of Wight's digital technology industry.

Co-organiser Carl Crawley, of Made by Hippo, Newport, said: "Technology conferences are often a whole day focussed on big announcements and long speeches but, for many, it’s really about the chatting and mingling in the bar afterwards as that’s where the real magic happens.

"So for Digital Disrupt we've changed it around — it's in the evening after work, we have some short, fun talks, and a lot more time for networking."

There will be talks and discussions, opportunities to share ideas and talk about new projects, and a chance to meet prospective employers.

Businesses looking to explore new technology will be able to meet local suppliers, and speakers will include BBC Robot Wars judge Dr Lucy Rogers, IBM master inventor Prof Andy Stanford-Clark and Mart Drake-Knight, co-founder of Isle of Wight eco clothing company Rapanui.

Co-organiser Matt Chatfield of Pinkeye Graphics, Ryde, said: "The Isle of Wight is a great place to work in the technology industry.

"You get all the benefits of living on a beautiful, laid-back island, and yet with good internet access you can be working for companies all around the world.

"We wanted to share some of that excitement and innovation — and it does us good to meet up and have a chat in real life."

The event will run from 6.30pm until late, and the bar will be open all evening.
