From Fran Weil, Bembridge:

I read with interest the report regarding fines for IW parents due to children’s non-attendance at school (CP, 26-20-18).

I fully applaud regular attendance at school, but if a child misses a day or two in respect of a holiday, or for a special family gathering, then I see no reason for this not to be authorised.

However, if parents are to be encouraged to observe term time rules then surely schools should respect holiday time for rest and relaxation and NOT set homework?

I am not talking about youngsters about to sit important exams but primary school children aged nine.

Can I suggest the best way to get parents to co-operate, and adhere to school rules, is for schools to respect the allotted holidays and allow children, and their parents, some down time and rest.

Would that not be fair?
