HOW'S this for an idea for celebrating Isle of Wight Day - tucking into an Island shaped scone.

From March to November, the owners of Vernon Cottage in Shanklin have handmade enough scones to stretch across the Isle of Wight from north to south - and are now well on their way to completing the crossing from east to west as well.

Using their own special recipe, every morning more than 100 scones are handmade and hand cut into the iconic shape of the Isle of Wight by Chef owner, Paul de Vere who thinks they are the perfect treat to celebrate Isle of Wight Day on Saturday.

Susan de Vere, co-owner of Vernon Cottage in Old Shanklin – also known for its famous homemade Old Shanklin Pie – said: “It truly is a labour of love and a nod to the uniqueness and beauty of the Isle of Wight. Miles of scrumptious Isle of Wight Shaped Scones stretching from the sandy beaches of the South up and over the stunning countryside to the sailing capital of Cowes. A delicious vision to celebrate Isle of Wight Day.”

Paul who starts baking at 7.30am every day, said: “People are now coming from all over the world to enjoy our scones and it’s a great attraction for visitors to sample all the foodie delights and sights the amazing Isle of Wight has to offer.”
