SIX fire engines are tackling a large fire spreading across the cliffs near St Lawrence.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are fighting the blaze between Old Park Road and Undercliff Drive after receiving the call at just before 2pm.

Two engines from Newport, two from Ryde, one from Shanklin and one from East Cowes with two water carriers from Freshwater and Ventnor are currently on scene.

A spokesperson from the fire service said the fire started at 50 metres x 50 metres but is spreading uphill at a rapid rate.

People are advised to avoid the area.

UPDATE 5.30pm — A spokesperson from the Police has confirmed that no homes are currently being evacuated.

Police are on scene to assist the fire service.

UPDATE 7.15pm — The fire has now been brought under control.

Two pumps remain at the scene to damp down.

A spokesperson from the Isle of Wight council said: "Thank you for avoiding the area to allow the firefighters to concentrate on tackling the fire."
