BROADCASTERS John Sergeant and Michael Buerk helped the Royal London Yacht Club toast its 180th anniversary.

They were in Cowes filming a Channel 5 travel show, in which they sail around Britain in a 64ft cutter, Bonaventure, and were invited to join the festivities.

Held on Friday (June 29), the celebrations included an 11 gun salute and 'three cheers' at 6pm — marking, to the hour, the start of the club's first ever race.

Seven yachts took part in the race, held 180 years ago, the day after Queen Victoria's coronation.

Guest speaker at the celebration was former first sea lord, Admiral Lord West of Spithead, who arrived at the club’s London landing aboard the Commodore’s boat, Matchless II.

More than 100 members and guests enjoyed a reception, dinner, and music by the Medina Marching Band.
