PEOPLE on the Isle of Wight have been urged to watch out for a new phone scam.

The Isle of Wight Council's trading standards team has warned people not to give out their bank details following reports of a new scam targeting Island people.

Fair trading officer Sally Ash said: "Residents are being contacted by someone claiming to be the telephone preference service — a free service blocking nuisance and scam calls — telling them there would now be a payment for this and persuading them to part with their bank details.

"There is no fee for this service and, more importantly, never give your bank details out to anyone asking for them, either over the phone or via an email."
