A SANDOWN man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a major emergency services call out in Gurnard this evening (Thursday). 


Police were called to the scene on The Avenue, Gurnard, shortly after 4pm and an ambulance took a woman to hospital.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "On arrival, officers found a 45-year-old woman from Gurnard who was seriously ill. She was taken to St Mary’s Hospital and was pronounced dead.

"A 60-year-old man from Sandown has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

"Anyone with information about this incident should call 101 quoting 44170032981."

Forensic investigators have visited the house this morning (Friday), meanwhile neighbours have spoken on their shock.

Jane Burton described the scene that confronted her as she returned from walking her dog yesterday (Friday).

"There must have been nine police cars in the road. There were lots of police.

"The lady was put into an ambulance and they were doing CPR in the back. Then the ambulance shot off to St Mary's Hospital, with police escorting them," said Jane.

Katie Ganly, also of the Avenue, said: "It's just really sad."

*At around 4.30pm today (Friday), police said the arrested man remained in custody.
