SHANKLIN mourned the death of one of Shanklin's best known and oldest residents.
Mr Richard Young, who was headmaster at the Parochial Schools for 35 years, passed away at the age 82.
He was active in public and business affairs and was a county councillor for the Shanklin district for 11 years.

August 21, 1943
The village of Shorwell banded together against what they branded 'human pests'.
The human pests had been stealing from various allotments around the village, despite the wartime effort to produce as much food as possible.
One resident said the act was 'particularly contemptible' and that the pests were 'saboteurs'.

August 17, 1968
Her majesty the Queen visited the British Hovercraft factory at East Cowes.
During her stay for Cowes Week, she was accompanied by Prince Andrew and Viscount Linley and was shown around by chairman of the British Hovercraft Corporation.
Her majesty's visit arrived on the tails of a large debate in parliament on the laws surrounding the crafts.

Marks and Spencers finally received the go-ahead from Medina planners for its proposed £15 million store in Newport.
The approval was given at a specially convened meeting which many residents from Medina Avenue crowded into County Hall.
More than 550 people signed a petition urging approval for the store.

The Island was set to be at the hub of cutting edge wind turbine technology, bringing an investment of tens of millions and more than 100 skilled jobs.
Vestas, a turbine blade manufacturing company, announced a new state-of-the-art research and development centre at its IW based site.
Managing director Rob Sauven said he was jumping for joy.
