LAST Saturday was supposed to be the start of the league cricket season for teams on the Isle of Wight, playing in a new one-off mini league, but the good old British weather rained on its parade.
However, barring a freak of nature, it should get underway this afternoon at long last, with some cracking games to look forward to in the A and B divisions.
Teams have been split into two leagues (A and B), with each team playing each other once in a 40-over format, run under stringent Covid-19 playing guidance from the ECB.
The league will see — for the first time in many years — Southern and Hampshire league sides take on Island teams.
In Division A — the match of the day — Newport host Shanklin and Godshill 1 at the Victoria Recreation Ground.
At Steephill, Ventnor 1 will be putting a strong side out against Northwood 1, while St Helens entertain Ryde 1 at The Green.
In Division B, Freshwater take on Ventnor 2 at the West Wight sports and Community Centre ground.
Northwood 2 will take on Ryde 2 at The Park, Cowes, while Shanklin and Godshill 2 face Ryde Cavaliers and Bembridge at Westhill.
All matches are scheduled to start at 1.30pm.
