FIRE crews were called out to an underground electrical fire in the centre of an Isle of Wight town this morning (Thursday).

The incident in a section of Pyle Street, outside Newport Conservative Club, between TK Maxx and Wylde bar, has been closed off to traffic following a report to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight and Rescue Service at 9.13am.

The fire service sent two appliances from Newport and the road was closed by the police on their request.

Eyewitness could hear 'popping and crackling' with smoke coming from the charred hole on the pavement.

It is not known if there was an explosion which caused the hole in the road.

Southern Electric have been called to the scene.

There were no injuries reported.

UPDATE 2pm - Pyle Street remains closed, with four vehicles from Southern Electric on site.

The road has been dug up and cars trying to travel down the road are having to reverse back onto St James' Street.
