FIREFIGHTERS were called to a car that burst into flames in Freshwater yesterday evening (Wednesday).

Crews from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to Avenue Road in the town centre at 10.21pm.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We were called to a car fire outside of the Vine Inn in Freshwater.

"Fortunately there were no injuries and we sent one appliance from Freshwater who were able to extinguish the vehicle. We left at 10.40pm."

One bystander told the County Press: "The car was in flames in a matter of seconds.

"Fortunately, the fire brigade was situated 100 metres up the road from the fire, otherwise the former Lloyds Bank building could have suffered severe damage."
