FIRE crews are in Shanklin this afternoon (Thursday) after an electrical substation caught fire, leaving homes without power.

Crews from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to Oaklyn Gardens off Green Lane at 4.32pm after flames were sighted from the substation.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We were called to smoke and the smell of burning at the substation, some witnesses had reported seeing flames.

"As a result of the fire some of the homes in the area have been experiencing power outages.

"We sent one appliance from Shanklin, and a crew from Southern and Scottish Electricity is on its way.

"Crews are still on the scene."
